Why I Switched from a Hymer B544 to a Hymer B574 CL as a Solo Traveling Mom

Buying a Hymer B544 felt like the start of freedom on wheels, but sleeping arrangements with a toddler turned out to be more challenging than expected. After a full summer of adapting, I chose a Hymer B574 CL with a better layout for a solo mom. Here is the honest story behind that decision.

In 2025 I bought my very first camper, a Hymer B544. It was the start of a new chapter for me and my toddler daughter. I had dreamed about traveling through the Netherlands in our own little home on wheels and creating memories together on the road.

That summer we visited several campsites, including Landal De Krim on Texel and De Zandhegge in Emst. Those trips confirmed how much I loved camper life. Waking up surrounded by nature, slow mornings outside with coffee and a toddler exploring the campsite, and the freedom to move whenever we wanted. It felt exactly like the lifestyle I had imagined.

However, the sleeping arrangement in the Hymer B544 quickly became a challenge.

Sleeping in the Drop Down Bed in the Hymer B544

The Hymer B544 is a compact motorhome and comes with a drop down bed above the driver seats. My idea was to sleep together in that bed. It seemed cozy and practical, especially when traveling alone with a young child.

The first night already showed that this was not as simple as I had thought. I waited until my daughter was asleep before climbing into the bed. As soon as I moved next to her she woke up. Every small movement disturbed her sleep.

To avoid waking her again, I decided to sleep on the small one person bench in the living area. That bench became my bed for the entire summer.

The Hymer B544 bench is suitable for sitting, but sleeping on it every night is a different story. It was narrow and not very comfortable. I did not sleep particularly well, but she did. And as a mother, that was more important to me at the time.

Still, after months of broken sleep, I started questioning whether this layout would work long term.

Considering Selling the Camper

There were moments when I considered selling the camper altogether. Traveling solo with a toddler requires practical solutions, and sleep is essential. I loved the Hymer brand and I loved camper life, but I realized that the layout simply did not fit our situation.

Instead of giving up on camper life, I decided to look for a different model that would better suit our needs.

Choosing a Hymer B574 CL Under 6 Meters

Because of the storage restrictions at my stalling, I had to stay within a maximum length of six meters. That limited my options, but I knew I wanted to stay with Hymer. I appreciate the build quality and the interior feel of these campers.

After researching different layouts, I chose the Hymer B574 CL. This model offers a French bed in the rear and a drop down bed in the front. That combination was exactly what we needed. My daughter can sleep in the drop down bed while I have my own fixed bed in the back.

Another advantage is that I moved from a 2002 model year to a 2007 model year. It feels like a natural step forward in both layout and comfort, while still remaining within the six meter requirement.

Waiting to Test the New Layout

I purchased the Hymer B574 CL in November. Since I do not camp during the winter months, the camper is currently stored and suspended in the stalling. It is ready for new adventures once spring arrives.

I am genuinely curious to see how the nights will go in this new setup. Having both a fixed bed and a drop down bed should make a significant difference for a solo traveling mom with a toddler.

Camper life has taught me that freedom is not only about movement but also about practical comfort. Choosing the right layout matters just as much as choosing the destination.

In 2025 I started with a Hymer B544 and learned what works and what does not. In 2026 we will begin a new chapter with the Hymer B574 CL, and I am looking forward to seeing how this upgrade supports our life on the road.

More adventures are coming soon.
