Looking for a winter destination in Austria that is close to the Netherlands? In this blog I share our snowboard trip to Kleinwalsertal, where we were on the slopes within six hours of driving. From staying at Ilfen Hotel Arosa to riding the pistes and relaxing in the wellness area, this is why Kleinwalsertal is an ideal and family friendly snow destination.

If you are looking for a snowboard destination in Austria that is surprisingly close to the Netherlands, Kleinwalsertal might be one of the best options. For us, it turned out to be the perfect combination of short travel time, proper mountain scenery and relaxed luxury.

We left the Netherlands at half past three in the morning. Driving at night meant empty roads and steady progress. By half past nine, we were already in Kleinwalsertal. Less than six hours later, we were standing in the mountains. That feeling never gets old.

Kleinwalsertal truly offers everything you expect from Austria, but without the endless twelve hour drive.

Staying at Ilfen Hotel Arosa in Kleinwalsertal

We stayed at Ilfen Hotel Arosa in Kleinwalsertal and it immediately felt like a gift to be there. Upon arrival we were welcomed with a rose and a staff member personally carried our luggage to the room. It set the tone for a comfortable and relaxing stay.

The hotel is located only about one hundred meters from the Hubertus lift, a drag lift that connects you quickly to the ski area. After checking in, we changed into our snow gear almost immediately. Within minutes we were on our snowboards.

There is something incredibly satisfying about stepping out of your hotel and being on the slopes right away.

Snowboarding in Kleinwalsertal

Kleinwalsertal is part of a larger ski area and offers a good variety of slopes. It is large enough to explore for several days without getting bored. One thing to keep in mind is that the area is divided into different sections. To move between some parts, you often take a ski bus. This works well, but it is good to know in advance.

The slopes are well maintained and suitable for different levels. We spent hours riding, enjoying wide pistes and mountain views. On the mountain we stopped for Kaiserschmarrn, which is simply a must during any Austrian snowboard trip. Warm, sweet and perfect after a few hours in the snow.

Wellness and Five Course Dinners

After a few hours on the slopes, we returned to the hotel. One of the highlights of Ilfen Hotel Arosa is the wellness area. It is large and beautifully designed, with multiple saunas, relaxation rooms and plenty of space to unwind after a day in the cold. The wellness area includes several sauna types and spacious relaxation zones, making it easy to fully relax and recharge.

Every evening we changed for dinner, which was a five course menu. The food was refined, beautifully presented and genuinely delicious. It added a touch of luxury to the active days outside.

If there is one small note, it would be that because it is a larger hotel, the atmosphere can feel slightly less personal. The service is professional and efficient, but you do notice that you are in a bigger establishment. That said, the comfort, food and facilities more than make up for it.

A Typical Day in Kleinwalsertal

Our days quickly found a rhythm.

Breakfast.
Snowboarding.
Lunch on the mountain.
More snowboarding.
Wellness.
Five course dinner.

Repeat.

It is the kind of routine that feels grounding and energizing at the same time.

A Family Friendly Winter Destination

Kleinwalsertal is also a very child friendly ski area. There are dedicated children’s zones and beginner areas, which makes it ideal for families. Because the travel distance from the Netherlands is relatively short, it is much easier to manage with kids compared to destinations deeper into Austria.

For families who want the Austrian mountain experience without an extremely long drive, Kleinwalsertal is a very practical choice.

Is Kleinwalsertal Worth It for a Snowboard Trip?

Absolutely.

You get proper Austrian mountains, well prepared slopes, cozy mountain huts and a solid infrastructure. The fact that you can be there within six hours if traffic allows makes it even more attractive.

For us, it was the ideal quick mountain escape. Close enough to feel accessible, but still fully Alpine.

And after mornings on the slopes and evenings in the wellness, it felt like the perfect balance between adventure and comfort.
