Wind is something we often complain about in the Netherlands, but for kitesurfers it is exactly what makes this country so good. With a long coastline, wide beaches and several large lakes, there are more kitesurf spots than many people expect.
For me there is always something magical about standing on the beach, launching your kite and slowly gliding onto the water. The sound of the wind, the freedom, and that moment when your board starts moving. The Netherlands might not be a tropical surf destination, but it offers some surprisingly great places to ride.
Here are ten of the best kitesurf spots in the Netherlands. Some are perfect for beginners, others are great if you want waves or big air sessions.

1. Brouwersdam
Brouwersdam is probably the most famous kitesurf spot in the Netherlands. The dam sits between the North Sea and the Grevelingenmeer, which means you can choose between flat water and waves.
On the lake side you often find smoother water which is perfect for freestyle or beginners. The sea side offers waves and stronger conditions. The beach is huge so there is plenty of space to set up your kite.
2. Workum
Workum is located at the IJsselmeer and is one of the most popular beginner spots in the country. The water is shallow and relatively flat which makes it a great place to practice waterstarts or new tricks.
On windy days the beach fills with vans, campers and riders enjoying the session.
3. Scheveningen
Scheveningen is one of the most iconic beach spots in the Netherlands. The North Sea often delivers good wind and fun waves.
After your session you can walk straight into one of the beach bars which makes it a great place to spend the whole day.
4. Wijk aan Zee
This spot is known for stronger winds and good waves. Many experienced riders come here for big air sessions.
The beach is wide and the vibe is relaxed. If the wind picks up this can be one of the best places in the country.
5. Zandvoort
Zandvoort is one of the easiest kitesurf spots to reach, especially if you are coming from Amsterdam.
The beach is long and the wind direction is often ideal. In autumn the conditions here can be amazing.
6. Noordwijk
Noordwijk has a long coastline and plenty of space to ride. Both beginners and advanced riders come here.
When the wind lines up you can cruise along the coast for kilometers.
7. Maasvlakte
For riders who enjoy stronger conditions the Maasvlakte is a great place. The wind can be powerful and the waves can get quite big.
This spot is better suited for experienced kitesurfers.
8. Texel
The Dutch Wadden Islands offer some beautiful kitesurf locations and Texel is one of them.
The beaches are wide, the nature is stunning and the wind is often steady. A kitesurf session here always feels a bit like being on holiday.
9. Mirns
Mirns is a hidden gem at the IJsselmeer. The water is shallow and relatively flat which makes it a great place to practice tricks.
It is usually less crowded than many coastal spots which makes sessions here feel calm and relaxed.
10. Vrouwenpolder
Vrouwenpolder in Zeeland is another beautiful kitesurf spot. The beaches are wide and the scenery is stunning.
With the right wind direction the conditions here can be perfect.
The best season for kitesurfing in the Netherlands
The windiest months in the Netherlands are usually spring, autumn and winter. During these seasons it is common to get strong wind and great sessions.
Summer can be more unpredictable, but with a larger kite or a foil board you can still enjoy plenty of days on the water.
Kitesurfing in the Netherlands
What I personally love about kitesurfing here is the variety. One day you are riding waves in the North Sea, the next day you are gliding over flat water at the IJsselmeer.
And the best part is that you never have to travel very far. Within a few hours you can reach almost any kitesurf spot in the country.
See you on the water.
